The first thing you should do when you crack or chip a tooth is to book an appointment with the dentist to find out how bad the crack really is. Early diagnosis and treatment are extremely important because cracks can worsen over a period of time and cause irreparable damage. UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CRACKS
- Craze lines are superficial cracks that lie on the surface of the enamel. Craze lines don’t cause any symptoms and they don’t do any damage to the gum or the root of the tooth.
- Fractured cusp is the name used to describe a crack that has broken off part of the chewing surface of the tooth. Fractured cusps are either filled or protected with dental crowns.
- Cracked tooth describes a tooth that has been damaged by a crack. When this crack reaches the root of the tooth, a root canal procedure will have to be performed. If the crack is not treated and extends to the gum line, the tooth will separate into pieces and it will have to be removed.
- Vertical root fractures are similar to split teeth. The only difference is that the crack starts from the root and extends upwards towards the chewing surface. If the crack is not very deep, the dentist will be able to save some part of the tooth.
WHAT ARE CHIPPED TEETH?
Chipped teeth are teeth that have lost some part of the enamel. If the enamel breaks off because of a minor accident or teeth grinding, the dentist will be able to restore the tooth. To fix a chipped tooth, the dentist will either have to attach the broken enamel back to the tooth or use a tooth coloured filling or crown to strengthen the tooth.
SYMPTOMS OF CRACKED TEETH
Cracked teeth cause pain and discomfort. They may also become infected from within if the cracks deepen and aren’t treated on time. Treatment is not 100% successful all the time. Fractured teeth don’t heal independently and the fractures can deepen over a period of time, calling for surgical tooth extraction.
PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM TOOTH FRACTURES
In order to protect your natural teeth, you should consider wearing mouth guards when you’re playing sports. Avoid using your teeth to break hard foods or open bottle caps. Also, talk to your dentist about getting retainers if you suffer from teeth grinding (Bruxism) at night.
